The Bure Valley Railway – www.bvrw.co.uk

The Railway from Wroxham to Aylsham is the Bure Valley Railway and runs for nine miles on a 15” gauge track.

This railway is built on the old East Norfolk Railway’s Aylsham Extension (Great Eastern Railway) standard gauge railway track bed from Hoveton to Aylsham. The route was closed by British Rail after being in use for freight only trains in 1982.

With a large collection of steam engines and a regular service which offers discounts on fares to Bittern Line ticket holders, this scenic railway offers views across the Bure Valley and a chance to explore the market town of Aylsham.
Intermediate stations offer the chance for walkers and cyclists to use the Bure Valley trail which runs along side the railway to either walk or cycle along the trail and return on the train. Local cycle hire is available at Hoveton & Wroxham (www.broadlandcyclehire.co.uk 01603 783096).

Santa specials operate during December along with Days out with Thomas the Tank engine special events. For further details visit their web site or call 01603 733858

The North Norfolk Railway - www.nnr.co.uk

The North Norfolk Railway known as the Poppy Line, offers a 10.5 mile round trip by steam train (vintage diesel trains on some journeys) through a delightful area of North Norfolk designated as being of outstanding natural beauty. To the south are wooded hills and the Norfolk beauty spots of Kelling Heath and Sheringham Park; to the north, the sea, all within easy walking distance from the various stations. The flowers are a sight to see throughout the year. In spring and early summer there are primroses, bluebells and the yellow gorse. Later in the year the poppies abound and are set off by the mauve heathers. Enjoy a ride on an historic steam train - you can break your journey to look around the stations and marvel at the steam laden atmosphere from a bygone age on the only remains of the Midland and Great Northern Railway.

The end of then line is at Holt, and short distance from a wonderful Georgian town with many eclectic shops and places for refreshment. A connecting vintage bus meets busy trains at Holt and you can enjoy a ride on the top deck for views of the surrounding area. This only operates on Bank Holidays and Red Service timetable dates.
